Rooted & Real: Finding Friendship in Rural Places
If you’ve ever stood on the sidelines at a local event or walked into a small-town coffee shop and felt like everyone already has their people, you’re not alone.
Finding real, meaningful friendships in rural life can be a challenge, especially when you’re juggling work, kids, or a move that dropped you into a town where you don’t know anyone yet. But here’s the good news: connection is still possible. And so worth it.
Sister, we know that building your village in a rural area doesn’t always come naturally.
You might have to take the first step. But what’s waiting on the other side? Community. Encouragement. And the kind of friendship that makes rural living feel a little less lonely and a whole lot more joyful.
Here are a few tips for finding friendship in rural places:
Show Up for Real Life
Friendships in small towns often bloom in everyday moments. A wave during preschool pickup. A conversation at the farmers market. Helping set up chairs before the school fundraiser.
You don’t need a perfect script, but a willingness to be present. Look for ways to show up, even when you’re tired or unsure. Over time, showing up becomes knowing someone’s name. Knowing someone’s name becomes checking in. And checking in becomes a real connection.
Say Yes to the Invite
It might feel awkward to walk into a room where you don’t know anyone, but say yes anyway. Whether it’s a moms’ night out, a church potluck, or a casual get-together after work, most friendships start with simply being in the room.
Even better? Be the one who does the inviting.
Suggest a walk. A coffee. A playdate. Don’t wait for “your people” to find you…go find them!
Look Beyond Your Bubble
Rural friendships don’t have to look like mirror images of your life. Some of the richest relationships are intergenerational, cross-industry, or built across different seasons.
Say yes to a connection that feels a little unexpected. It might just lead to the most grounding, life-giving friendship you didn’t know you needed.
The Beauty of Community
It’s easy to believe that everyone else already has their circle. But the truth? Most women are looking for deeper connections, too. We just have to be brave enough to go first.
When you start putting yourself out there (even a little), you open the door to something beautiful. To friendships that cheer you on, show up when it counts, and remind you that you don’t have to do rural life alone.
You weren’t meant to.
Start by saying yes—yes to the invite, yes to showing up, yes to trying again. Then tell us: What’s helped you build friendships in your rural community?
